Guzzarish

Guzzarish

I’ve just come back from a trip to India, so I thought it might be appropriate to complain about a new Hindi movie! 🙂

Guzzarish just came out recently and it is a lush and visually stunning movie. Unfortunately, the preview was a whole lot better than the movie itself. I can’t be terribly surprised because India is not very progressed in terms of disability issues, but I still had my hopes high for it.

It is about a high level quad who wants to die.

What a shock. Sigh. Does no one ever get tired of that plot? How about some creativity, people?

It wasn’t clear why he wanted to die. He had been living for fourteen years with his injury. He had a lovely house, a gorgeous nurse who loved him, he had a successful radio program and was beloved of many people. Suddenly one day he announces that he wants assisted suicide, for no particular reason. He puts it out on his radio program and asks people to vote on whether he should die or not. People call in from all over the area to say that he should live, that they love him and he has provided joy and help in their lives. But that doesn’t deter him for some reason.

His home is not terribly accessible. With the amount of money he has and the time he’s been injured, I really think he would have more movement in his own home.

At the house he has a great wheelchair that he can control and gives his body good support. For some inexplicable reason, whenever they leave the house they put him in a dinky manual chair that is terrible for him. Why? I just don’t get it.

This movie was ignorant and uneducated and the plot barely held together or made any sense.
