Is (W)hole about me?

My first novel, (W)hole, went through a lovely promotion earlier this month which got it exposure to a much wider audience than normal. I think most of the people reading the book have been other devs or people with disabilities who have heard of devs and are curious. With the promotion, I think most of the readers are people who are curious and intrigued by the highly unusual subject of the book, but may have never heard of it before. I got a new review at Amazon that I found really interesting. Two things stood out to me about it. “My only complaint is that the book is written clearly for an audience who is into this fetish and because of this, it is a bit too technical, especially early on, with the ins and outs of this fetish. I visited the...

NaNoWriMo: Debrief

National Novel Writing Month is over and I am a winner. Which is to say that I got the 50,000 words from scratch. My thoughts about this process? I’m glad that I made my personal goal much higher. As I strived for 80,000 words, it made it a lot easier to reach the official goal. Despite a very detailed outline, there’s a lot of mess. This book will take a long time to clean up. However, like people say, I did find out new things about my characters and my plot as  I went. Struggling to get a scene to 1,000 words forced me to explore and test out some new ideas. For most of my books, those new ideas come from brainstorming and imagining, but not actually writing anything down until I know what I want. This time I made discoveries on the page, which is...

NaNoWriMo: Progress

NaNoWriMo: Progress

So, how is National Novel Writing Month going for me? Not great, actually. I started out strong, having a really detailed outline to work on.  But then I did a rough pass of all the most interesting scenes.  Now I have to go back and flesh out more, fill in gaps.  It’s the less fun part.  I got to 18,000 words with no trouble, then things started to get slow. Apparently it is typical for the NaNoer to slow down considerably in the second week. The wind is a little less in the sails, as it were. I also started having issues in my personal life, as you can see in yesterday’s post. It’s been difficult to focus on my writing, when my brain is going into love-sick mode!  Instead of efficiently spending the free time I have all day on Saturday, I...

NaNoWriMo: Editing

I seem to be very unusual as a novelist. From everything I hear and read about other novelists, it seems that people have a hard time writing briefly. Most commonly people write many, many extra words and need to trim dramatically.  A complete draft is 100, 000 words for them! I am exactly the opposite.  My natural style is extremely brief: short sentences, to the point, nothing flowery.  What this means is that I am able to take a huge idea and write a complete draft that’s 40,000 words.  It’s ridiculous.  That draft isn’t any good and most of what’s wrong with it is that the pacing is far too fast, important concepts and moments are not given enough weight, and there is more telling than showing. For those who don’t know, the...
