Monday Review: Me Before You
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes Review… Summary: This is another book in the quad-wants-to-die category, which tends to get me worked up. I’m waiting for a book where the quadriplegic doesn’t want to find a way to finish himself off. The quads I’ve known in real life were grateful to be alive and very appreciative of life, having come so close to losing it. Anyway, the story is that Lou, a charming young woman with a quirky sense of style, gets hired to be the carer for a quadriplegic man even though she has no experience at all. It turns out that she was hired more because of her cheery nature in the hopes that she will help bring him out of depression. Though the subject matter is heavy, it is a chick-lit style book. I was very surprised to...

A Swiftly Tilting Planet (Madeleine L’Engle’s Time Quintet) Review… Summary: This is not a romance and there isn’t much in the way of a love plot, but it does feature a touching love triangle with a character who I fell deeply in love with as a teenager. Madeline L’Engle writes young adult and children’s books, but does so in a way that doesn’t talk down to children, which makes them wonderful books at any age. The plot of A Swiftly Tilting Planet involves Charles Wallace (from A Wrinkle In Time, now 16) going back through history, inhabiting various lives that connect to Meg’s mother-in-law, who happens to be related to a terrorist threatening them. Charles Wallace is charged with subtly changing the flow of those...
Read MoreMonday Book Review: Canyon Mission by Meg Gardiner
Mission Canyon: An Evan Delaney Novel by Meg Gardiner Review… Summary: The main character, Evan, is a plucky, sarcastic jill-of-all-trades who is engaged to a handsome lawyer in a wheelchair, Jesse. The plot of this particular book has the man who ran over Jesse back in town after trying to run from manslaughter charges (Jesse’s friend was killed in the crash). Confusing motives and big corporations with shady dealings soon get involved and Evan plays detective with her many skills and interests. The Good: I’m a big fan of suspense/thriller books. I like that the love story, while there, doesn’t take the main stage. As I’ve said before, books where the conflict comes from something other than the man and woman bickering with each...
Read MoreMonday Book Review: Paradox by Lee Nilsen
Paradox edited by Lee Nilsen Review… Summary: This is a very special book to me. It is a collaboration that I was invited to participate in. The book is nearly 400 pages long and filled with stories, poems, and musings centered around the “imperfect” hero motif (I dislike the term “imperfect” as I find nothing at all imperfect about these great guys!) The other great thing about this book is that the majority of the proceeds from the eBook go to a charity called LifeRollsOn.org, which helps people with spinal cord injuries to reclaim their lives, particularly through sporting events. The Good: A couple of the stories in here are long enough to be their own stand alone novellas! My favorite is The Best Friend by Annabelle. Â She has a...

Daredevil’s Run (Silhouette Romantic Suspense) by Kathleen Creighton Review… Summary: Former partners and lovers who ran an adventure business together (offering rock climbing lessons and white water rafting tours), have not seen each other in five years.  Not since Matt was paralyzed in a freak climbing accident. Alex  tried to stick by him at the time, but Matt wasn’t able to deal with maintaining their relationship while adjusting to his new disability. Now he’s back to try to make up for his earlier behavior, but someone else has another agenda. The Good: The suspense/intrigue part is light, but it’s just enough to give the hero and heroine something to worry about. I like that the driving force of the plot is not them being...
Read MoreIn Praise of Wounded Hero Romance
I have a guest essay over at author Anne Holly’s blog!  I’m reading her book Strings Attached now. It’s quite good. There is a side character who uses a wheelchair and she’s told me that she’s considering writing a romance just for him! I hope she does. I’ll be ready to tell you guys all about it if that happens. Please stop by Anne’s blog and take a look at my essay, leave your comments, and enjoy! 😀 http://anneholly.blogspot.com An excerpt from the essay… No one seems to worry about the feelings of the men stereotyped in other genre romances. We read books with naked male torsos on the cover where you can’t even see the faces of these men. No one says that we’re being insensitive to these men. What makes...
