NaNoWriMo: Progress

NaNoWriMo: Progress

So, how is National Novel Writing Month going for me?

Not great, actually.

I started out strong, having a really detailed outline to work on.  But then I did a rough pass of all the most interesting scenes.  Now I have to go back and flesh out more, fill in gaps.  It’s the less fun part.  I got to 18,000 words with no trouble, then things started to get slow.

Apparently it is typical for the NaNoer to slow down considerably in the second week. The wind is a little less in the sails, as it were.

I also started having issues in my personal life, as you can see in yesterday’s post. It’s been difficult to focus on my writing, when my brain is going into love-sick mode!  Instead of efficiently spending the free time I have all day on Saturday, I spend it wishing I were with the object of my affection and feeling frustrated that I am not.  Should hold off on that until December. Seriously.

As things stand now, I am on pretty good track to finish the standard 50K goal, but my personal 80K goal is looking bleak.  We will see.  I might pull it out at the end, but I actually do not work well under pressure at all.  I panic and freeze up.

Here is an image of what my outline on yWriter looks like now, you can see the word counts on the chapters filling in.

In order to meet my goal, I need 2,300 words for each chapter. Focusing on filling in that way is how I hope to still make my 80K goal. If I succeed, I plan to reward myself with a computer game I’ve been wanting (I know, the writing is a reward in itself, but external motivators help!). If I make 50K I will get myself a funny writing t-shirt either through nanowrimo.org or through cafepress.

    Hi Ruth.

It’s quite common to slump in the middle which is where we are now. My project is far too big for NaNo as the research is onerous but I’m determined to work through it. I’m a bit over 20,000 now but am on a bit of a roll. Found I had to go lock myself in the library to get anything done.

There have been 2 guest posts up on RFW. The current one talks about plotting so may be helpful. On my L’Aussie post I have a simple exercise to get your head around your novel.

Hang in there and I hope your personal life is on the up and up…

Thanks! Week two really is a struggle. Brain is not wanting to put down anymore terrible words! lol.

I think I’m getting my rhythm back today though. I just can’t stop thinking about what a whole lot of work revision on this is going to be.
