NaNoWriMo: My Plot

This month I am writing the first draft of Parallel Loves: a story across universes.

It is a science-fiction romance told from four points of view.  I’m still trying to get a blurb written. All my attempts focus too much on the characters and not enough on the plot, but here is my current attempt:

When Talia sees a man who isn’t quite there, she worries about her sanity right before a big promotion. He keeps showing up, claiming to be from a parallel universe.  According to him, she shouldn’t be able to see him. No one else in her world does.

 

Trent is determined to prove that he’s real and to figure out why Talia can see him. He is fascinated by the impossible and the device he uses to travel between universes was stolen from a government program.  He is conducting illegal research, motivated to see happier worlds than his own.

 

Trent’s older brother is unable to get a job and is frequently harassed for his disability.  Reece lost a leg during a war, and in their world people believe that being injured in war is a sign of cowardice. Reece must try to hide his disability.

 

The only person who knows the truth about how Reece was hurt is a young woman named Faith. She was there.  Their world believes in strict segregation and Faith is Black. She and Reece should never have met, but they share a powerful connection.

 

Life becomes dangerous for Reece and Faith when they fall in love and Faith finds herself pregnant.  Trent and Talia have also fallen in love, but they can never touch, being in different universes. Trent becomes weaker and weaker until they realize that the device he is using is deadly over time.

 

The only thing that can save them all is a secret from Talia’s past.

Characters:

Trent is a curious and scientifically-minded young man in a world that does not value those qualities.

Talia is precise and in control of everything in her life. She has a compulsion to fix other people’s problems while ignoring her own.

Reece is quiet and reserved, but will do anything to protect Trent from their dangerous father.

Faith is a displaced young woman who lost her family and whose future looks bleak.
